Heritage Health Club

Walking up to the double doors of the Heritage Christchurch is a treat in itself. I may be a long way from the Mediterranean, but the grandeur of the Italian High Renaissance Palazzo gives what’s left of Cathedral Square some much-needed character. As I walk under one of the magnificent stone arches, a golden handrail guides me up the steps and into an historic slice of the city.

Located in the tranquil luxe of this hotel is the multi-award winning oasis of wellbeing that is the Heritage Health Club. As I head downstairs the frosted glass door opens and owner Ken Mackwell welcomes me with a tour of the club’s stunning facilities.

Once changed into my lycra, I make a beeline for the treadmill, and notice a member being put through their paces by one of the club’s personal trainers as I insert my headphones, ready for my favourite work-out beats. I seem to go into a trance, and before I know it I’ve burned through a 6k run and 12k bike ride.

Turning around I take in my reward – the serene 20m lap pool enticing me to take a swim. There’s something simply satisfying about working out in a fully-equipped gym with the latest fitness gear (and let’s not forget those industry-leading professional trainers), knowing I’ll be rewarded for my efforts with the luxurious faculties of a heated lap pool, bliss-inducing spa, Norwegian pine-lined sauna and complimentary white fluffy towel!

Limited membership ensures your space, so there’s no jostling or waiting for equipment. Catching the eye of other members, a knowing nod indicates we’ve discovered something special.

After spending a long, blissful session in the spa I hit the 5-star changing rooms.

I leave revived, refreshed and ready to return again soon.
