Pepperberry Café & Florist

Pepperberry image x3

Walk into Christchurch’s Pepperberry Café & Florist and you’re greeted by the intoxicating aromatic trifecta of home-baked goodies, freshly brewed coffee and fragrant, fresh-cut flowers.

Perched on the busy corner of Bealey Avenue and Colombo Street, this sun-drenched hip café/florist hybrid is a veritable urban oasis where mother and daughter team Trish and Letty Hamilton have been combining their passions for killer café fare and coffee (Trish) and floristry (Letty) with a funky line of giftware since 2011.

Now an institution on the city’s café scene (even Prime Minister John Key is a fan), it’s not uncommon to find those in the know queuing at Pepperberry for a precision-made Hummingbird Coffee to enjoy alongside one of Trish’s fresh-from-the-oven muffins, scones and slices, made on site. (FYI, the Rocky Road is next level decadence.)

A perusal of the gourmet cabinet fare sees golden homemade Cornish pasties sitting alongside a selection of pies, paninis, frittatas and, during our visit, some seriously hearty Scotch eggs, while a seasonally-focussed menu sees hangover-curing corned beef hashcakes topped with free range poached eggs and mustard hollandaise sitting between the equally restorative cheesy scrambled free-range eggs with feta and fresh herbs, served up on ciabatta, and the homemade granola layered with yoghurt and served with fruit and milk – all equally perfect for a spot of feel-good brunch and people watching.

Perfectly-formed mini bouquet table settings and gravity-defying sprays of floral explosions confirm the 12-years of experience and floral artistry of qualified resident florist Letty. Follow your nose to discover a Tardis-like nook where craftily-positioned, beautifully bunched bouquets of fresh, in-season, flowers join covetous home and garden giftware, glassware and cards, make the most of the florist's small floor space. Having worked in both Japan and England, Letty's influences abound and impress. It's the perfect place to pick up that gift on the way home or out, perhaps while grabbing a coffee to go as well.

Pepperbery is certainly not your run of the mill café, and it's one that Christchurch is lucky to have!
