Local foodie fave Simo Abbari on the move to Continental

SimoCatering and hires business Continental has stepped things up a notch with the appointment of Simo Abbari as Executive Chef.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because it’s well known amongst foodies in the city – Moroccan-born Simo is the taste-maker behind delicatessen/cafe/cooking school Mosaic by Simo in Addington and pre-quake, Restaurant Simo’s at the Crowne Plaza.

Simo has vast and diverse experience in the industry, having trained in classical French cuisine, worked in kitchens around Europe and North Africa, and overseeing first-class airline catering from Tripoli before moving to our neck of the woods 22 years ago and working at the Millennium Hotel, Christchurch Parkroyal, Convention Centre and Westpac Trust Centre before opening his own ventures, which quickly became local favourites.

As Continental’s Executive Chef, Simo will be overseeing the cuisine direction all Continental’s food-based activities: Event Catering (weddings, private occasions, public and sporting events, corporate catering, conferencing and tradeshows); the Alff (Allergy Free Foods) brand; day-time restaurant Kingsford Kitchen in Southbrook; The Bakery at Rangiora; and the distinctive yet different styles of Continental’s exclusive venues - Newbery Lodge, Christchurch Gondola and Christchurch Tram.

He’ll also continue to offer cooking classes from Continental’s main kitchens at Southbook and hopes those who have enjoyed his cuisine over the years will sample what’s on offer at Kingsford Kitchen – as fans of his work, this sounds good to us!

The announcement continues a good month for Continental, who also picked up a “Gold Status” gong in this year’s Hire Industry Association of New Zealand Awards – one of just 5 such achievements around the country.
