Cityscape top picks

Trying to decide on the best spot for a lazy brunch or a big night out? Planning your weekend just got easier with our top picks!

Romantic retreats

Whether it’s a first date or an anniversary dinner many years later, a night of romance demands the perfect setting, exquisite food and gracious service. The Cornershop Bistro in Sumner fits the bill in every respect – and there’s the prospect of a beach walk after dinner! If you’re out to impress, Rotherhams of Riccarton is a high-end option, while Pescatore at The George is the
height of style.

Weekend brunch

A lazy Saturday morning brunch is the perfect way to kick off your weekend. The perfect coffee is a must, of course, plus a menu of old favourites with a few surprises just in case you’re in the mood. Joe’s Garage, with branches in Sumner and – as of late November – Upper Riccarton, ticks all the boxes. Brigette’s in Merivale is a popular choice and Under the Red Verandah serves an award-winning brunch.

Good for groups

Get the guys and girls together for a noisy catch-up over a few bottles of wine. This time of year just begs for after-work get-togethers and weekend celebrations – as if you needed an excuse to get together. Winnie Bagoes is a fail-safe option – plenty of atmosphere and great food. It stands to reason that pizza is perfect for sharing, which makes Tutto Bene in Papanui Road another good choice. Burgers & Beers is has buckets of atmosphere (and beer!). Making it easy for dinner out to turn into a major session, No.4 and Aikmans in Merivale morph into bars as the night wears on. Becks Southern Ale House in Colombo Street combines a bar and restaurant.

Al Fresco affairs

Of course, nothing says summer quite like dining outdoors – and don’t we Kiwis love it? If you’re after a drink, Cargo Bar has a sheltered terrace and Carlton Country Club has a cool little suntrap on the roof. Merivale is always a good choice for outdoor dining with a number of bars featuring outdoor tables. And, of course, there are great wineries like Hinton's that are perfect for a sunny afternoon.

Ethnic eateries

Spice things up with a meal the one of the city's great Thai restaurants, like Keo Thai, Abalone Thai or Chinwag Eathai. Or go for Indian at Arjee Bhajee – superb food with light options available. Bamboozle is a new offer in Sumner, serving Asian fusion cuisine.
