Walk with the Dead

Zombie: Red Zone

OK, we won’t lie to you Christchurch – we’re big fans of The Walking Dead TV series here and as such are pretty excited by the prospect of dodging the undead in the CBD at Project Z’s Zombie: Red Zone next month.

A smash-hit sellout in Auckland last year (under its original title, Apocalypse Z), Zombie: Red Zone yanks theatre audiences out of their comfy seats and sav blanc sippin’ ways, throwing them into the middle of a global zombie pandemic. Quarantined within a specially-built, site-specific military zone where all hell is breaking loose puts the audience at the centre of the experience. There’s no taking things in passively here – audiences must overcome challenges and grapple with their own humanity in the midst of a plague of the undead and their gnarly chattering teeth.

Brainchild (mmm, braaaaaains) of David Van Horn (Sione’s Wedding, Avatar) and former Christchurch local Simon London (My Wedding and Other Secrets, The Hobbit), the show has attracted huge numbers and breathless enthusiasm from critics for their end of days experience. Its success lead to Zombie: Red Zone Gaming – a ‘live-action-video-game’ version that combines immersive theatre, live gaming and interactive role play. Exploding outside the four walls of the Apocalypse Z performance space, Zombie: Red Zone Gaming will transform the entire CBD into an apocalyptic wasteland (with minimal effort!).

We reckon if anyone in New Zealand is mentally prepared and ready to tackle a Zompocalypse, it’s the people of Christchurch, so restock the canned food supplies, brush up on the map reading skills and start target practice with the shotgun – the zombies are coming and it will pay to be ready.
