Sometimes great views and the satisfaction of tackling one of the city's top walks in the glorious spring sunshine isn't quite enough to get you out of the door, which is why Cityscape has come to the party with a few more reasons besides! It's time to reward all that effort – our walk and 'recovery' matches are guaranteed to put a spring in your step! 1) Bridle Path Kick things ol' skool on the granddaddy of Christchurch's walks; people have been traversing the thigh-busting steepness of the original route between Lyttelton and Christchurch since the 1850s. Clock the views then celebrate your victory portside at Freeman's (below) in Lyttelton with a well-earned beer/wine and pizza on their deck, or nip back the other way over the hill and keep things historical at Heathcote institution the Valley Inn Tavern, where you can enjoy a seafood platter and sav blanc in the...

The first bite lights up my tastebuds like a pinball machine, ricocheting around my palette and firing up the sweet, sour and salty zones to converge in a star-seeing king hit. Crunchy, fresh, feisty and obscenely moreish, King of Snake’s deservedly-famous spinach leaf is a tightly-coiled flavour bomb of roasted coconut, peanuts, garlic, chilli and lime and effortlessly seduces. Eschewing street frontage and rubbernecking gawkers, Stealth Hospitality’s flagship epitomises off-the-grid nonchalance with its no-fuss entrance via unassuming alleyway. Equal measures chic sophistication and rock star swag, this post-quake bar raiser has become the measuring stick of cool with it’s a flawless union: a slick fit-out, top-the-game Asian fusion fare, and that elusive hybrid of über professional, efficient and disarming Kiwi charm/service usually reserved for the country’s luxury lodgings. With primo cocktails a given, its legendary namesake elixir is top shelf lightening-in-a-tumbler magic and not to be missed. Bitingly potent, it’s a...

Cityscape caught up with Kiwi opera legend Teddy Tahu Rhodes ahead of his picking up the straight razor as the Demon Barber in New Zealand Opera’s Sweeney Todd. Images: Jeff Busby. Tell us about the relationship between Sweeney and Mrs Lovett. It’s kind of a relationship where they need each other really. I think they are two people in this world that have different needs and they just cross each other’s paths; I think in time they get to become very fond of each other. I think throughout there is a genuine affection between to the two of them. What have you learnt about your character that you didn’t know before taking on the role? When you think of Sweeney you think of the Demon Barber, but he’s actually quite a tragic and sad man. He’s had a tragic life, so the story of his murderous side is just an...
