Art Beat Returns to Re:START

Art-beat-logoFree live music from local artists, art exhibitions, installations, performances and a night market are set to transform Re:START into both stage and art gallery for Art Beat again this summer. The second running of the three month programme of local art and music returns today (22nd of November) and runs through until the 23 February, helping to keep Christchurch entertained for an entire summer. There’s plenty of variety on the programme, which includes the thoughtful, the challenging, and the quirky.

The Art Beat art programme gives young, emerging artists a chance to take their work beyond the art gallery infrastructure. Each artist has been challenged to make their work for Art Beat site specific and relevant to the context of Re:START.

The Art Beat music programme presents live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with an emphasis on supporting local original acoustic music and emerging Christchurch songwriters. Giving support to the musicians who have remained in Christchurch is a key idea behind Art Beat, which is designed to provide an incentive for musicians to stay and become an important part of the city’s rebuild.

Along with the summer-long arts and music programme, an exciting night market in Re:START on the 14th of December will bring things together with live music, art wares, locally crafted quirky gifts, vintage clothing, treats and treasures.

Tracey Chambers, Chair of the Canterbury Community Trust (who are one of the backers of Art Beat) comments: “Many Cantabrians have been lamenting the loss of cultural activities in their communities … Funding the arts, across numerous disciplines brings us one step further to our vision in the restoration of cultural vitality in our City. In doing this we hope to bring some light and joy back into people’s lives.”

Art Beat Project Coordinator, Warren Feeney chimes in, “Art Beat is committed to an engagement with the arts that is meaningful, entertaining and challenging. What better place for this to happen than on the streets of the central city of Christchurch? Treating Re:START as a gallery and performance space, Art Beat aims to connect with the wider community in a way which is relevant and enjoyable.”
