Hot Spots for Summer Dining & Drinking

Christchurch, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants, cafés and bars to sample over summer 2012/13 ...

Al Fresco

Dux Dine, the latest incarnation of the Dux de Luxe, has a delightful outdoor dining space in a cottage garden. 50 Bistro at The George Hotel boasts a sheltered outdoor area with views out to Hagley Park – and fire tables to light the scene after dark. CBD Bar has a large terrace with plenty of tables for sipping a cold beer in the sun or sharing a pizza on a warm evening.

Exclusive Eats

Pescatore at The George Hotel is one of New Zealand’s finest restaurants – and the private dining room, The Boardroom, offers even greater exclusivity. Saggio di Vino has been reborn as a stylish new dining space, but still offers the same superb cuisine on which its reputation has been built. Chillingworth Road is a newcomer to Christchurch dining, but its drop-dead-gorgeous dining room and commitment to food make it a clear contender in this category.

Brunch Spots

Luciano’s Espresso Bar on Moorhouse Avenue serves a casual brunch that’s a cut above – and superb coffee. The Cornershop Bistro is a lovely relaxed spot for brunch in Sumner. Vic’s Café serves breakfast until 2pm – and there’s a great outdoor area for al fresco brunches over summer.

Iconic Places

Cookin’ with Gas continues to serve great bistro-style cuisine in a lovely heritage house across the road from The Arts Centre – a stalwart eatery in a city that’s changed so much. C1 has moved into a new space across the road from its pre-earthquake location, but the owners’ commitment to incorporating the heritage of Christchurch to create a café with its own distinct personality makes this a new icon of Christchurch. St Asaph Street Kitchen is another ‘newly iconic’ Christchurch eatery. Created by the owner of Le Café, easily one of the most iconic eateries in the former Christchurch, the new eatery is very different, but with the same commitment to food. It’s a must-try.

Gourmet Takeaways

Burgers & Beers Inc., now in two locations (Colombo and Cranford), is one of our favourite places for an easy Friday night dinner. Stop for a beer after work, then grab awesome burgers and fries to go. Arjee Bhajee serves up excellent Indian curries with no food colours or preservatives. Pick up takeaways from Riccarton or Cranford. Tutto Bene Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria in Merivale offers pizza that’s a slice above other options around the city.

Party Places

For after-dark atmosphere, some of our favs are intimate wine bar The Monday Room, cocktail bar King of Snake, with its ‘pirate king’ feel, and the buzzing atmosphere of Winnie Bagoes.
