What's Springing Up In Winter? New and Coming Soon in Christchurch
It may be winter, but Christchurch's regrowth continues regardless! There's lots of exciting brand new and upcoming ventures popping up around our city, all fresher than a July southerly. Among them are both some familiar names to happily welcome back and some exciting newcomers to go and fall in love with.
As the Cityscape Winter 2013 edition goes to print, new Italian bar and restaurant Baretta is opening its doors to reveal a piece of Italy at this sure-fire St Asaph Street hot spot. Our new issue deadline also falls on the much-awaited return of pizza legends Winnie Bagoes to the central city – two-and-a-half years is far too long to go between having a Winnie's pizza inside the Four Avenues if you ask us! We’re loving the new brick, lived-in aesthetic and can’t wait for mid-July.
On Gloucester Street we welcome back Asian favourite Sampan House and are looking forward to having after work drinks at funky bar/restaurant Morrell & Co when it joins the bonanza of bars and eateries on Lincoln Road.
Over on New Regent Street we see the welcome return of Coffee Lovers, Youngs Jewellers and Moko Cafe. Joining them on the Spanish-style pastel passage are exciting newbies Prestige Fudge, Mrs Higgins Cookies and Polished Diamonds – perfect for a sugar hit or spot of rock shopping. Also, keep an eye out for Groovy Glasses as they make the transition to the hot new address.
Nearby the chic Rendezvous Hotel is leading the charge of a slew of accommodation returning to the city. Watch out for the Novotel, The Latimer Hotel, Quest Christchurch Serviced Apartments, and the Heritage Christchurch in the Old Government Building popping up.
Mid-century furniture maestro Mr Mod has opened a new shop on Papanui Road while on Hayton Road in Sockburn it’s good to see Willburn Furniture & Restorations back in business. Vinyl aficionados will need to put Hornby Mall on their record radar with Penny Lane building their new kiosk there even as we type out these words!
Over on Madras Street, tucked behind the NG Building, New City Barbers, home to Cut Throat Jim, offers an old-school shave, snip, sip and dartboard in their slick new digs. And make sure to keep an eye out for the return of She Chocolat’s double-decker bus of decadence spreading the joy of chocolate on its Truly Inspired Tours of Christchurch.
