Canterbury's biggest event is back for another year, and Cityscape headed along on a chilly opening Wednesday to scope out this year's action. As soon as we arrived we caught some international woodchopping action in progress at the splinter-laden Woodchopping Arena. Competition runs consistently throughout the three days of the show.   Go, son! You chop that log.   Sheep dog trial competition also runs throughout the show. Here Cloud tries to wrangle some sheep that had a frustrating tendnecy to run in circles! Sheep apparently react better to dogs of their own colour though, we were told, so we're sure Cloud got them sorted in the end.   The annual "Canstruction" competition challenges teams to make structures / sculptures made entirely out of unopened cans of food. After public display, they're dismantled and the cans are donated to the Christchurch City Mission for distribution to those in need. This year's...

Spring means one thing in these parts – Cup & Show Week. Action heats up alongside the weather as we all celebrate Canterbury’s biggest party in style during the week-long mix of glam parties and rural flava in November. Gussy yourself up for the big-money/fashion-stakes of the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup, then grab the kids (yours or someone else’s) for the region’s main event, the Canterbury A&P Show, and plan out your fab farm day (or hey, just go solo and spend some serious adults-only time at the BaaBaa Bar. We’re not judging.). Watch out for splinters at the woodchopping competition, discover something delicious for lunch from the region’s top gourmet food producers in the Food and Wine NZ Pavilion, and catch Kiwi icons The Feelers live on Show Day (Friday the 13th). (Do NOT go on one of the ghost trains, though. The only thing that will haunt...
