Spring means one thing in these parts – Cup & Show Week. Action heats up alongside the weather as we all celebrate Canterbury’s biggest party in style during the week-long mix of glam parties and rural flava in November. Gussy yourself up for the big-money/fashion-stakes of the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup, then grab the kids (yours or someone else’s) for the region’s main event, the Canterbury A&P Show, and plan out your fab farm day (or hey, just go solo and spend some serious adults-only time at the BaaBaa Bar. We’re not judging.). Watch out for splinters at the woodchopping competition, discover something delicious for lunch from the region’s top gourmet food producers in the Food and Wine NZ Pavilion, and catch Kiwi icons The Feelers live on Show Day (Friday the 13th). The local art scene did it tough for a while after the quakes, with lack of suitable spaces in particular a real problem, but necessity being the mother of invention (particularly in resilient art circles), we’ve seen it bounce back well, with artistic havens popping up in all sorts of places. With the work of so many outstanding local artists showcased within easy reach, there’s really no excuse for not knowing the local talent – so get out there and uncover the next big thing! Central City We may be waiting on the Arts Centre, Christchurch Art Gallery (soon!) and CoCA Gallery (very soon!) to re-open, but that doesn’t mean the central city is bereft of art – far from it.
