Orleans is the kind of place the word “moody” was invented for. When we open the big door in Strange’s Lane and head in (in the early evening; such is the popularity of the place that it’s the only booking we can get!) we’re greeted by the soft glow of candles amidst the dimly-lit, darkly stained interior. Voodoo-esque figurines and photographs of jazz musicians look down on us from up near the high ceiling, and the neon behind the bar (the brightest thing in the room) beckons with a warm yellow glow. It all feels rather like we’ve stumbled through a portal to a laidback jazz club haunt on the Louisiana bayou somewhere.Perusing the fierce new winter menu and deciding we’re hungry, we back ourselves to tackle the whole pound rump steak, chargrilled and served with heaping helpings of dirty black rice and béarnaise sauce, also opting for the Caesar...

Posing one of the city's most delicious dilemmas, the crew at Orleans have put three bodacious shakes to the vote (Banoffee, Oreo and Maple Bacon) to combo with their famous monthly (and possibly world famous) Chicken Waffles on Wednesday for a Shakes & Waffles extravaganza on 30 March. For just $12 you’ll get a killer serving for their legendarily fierce Orleans Waffle & Fried Chicken, along with the most popular shake in the vote! We road-tested these bad boys and immediately booked a table, hankering for another taste of their life-changing Maple Bacon creation. Cast your vote (wisely) at their Facebook page ... and we'll see you down there at the end of the month! OrleansStrange’s Lane89 Lichfield Street03 365 7312www.orleans.co.nz  ...

“The menu is made for sharing and you’ll want to take a little taste from each of the Sumthin’s,” enthuses our waitress over the toe-tappingly raucous strains of Seth Hamilton and the Jimmy Rainy Quartet, which are saxing their way up to Orleans’ suitably broody mezzanine level.Strange's Lane’s first birthday is in full swing and Christchurch’s ragin’ Cajun quarter is channelling some serious Bourbon Street swagger. Tucked up an unassuming High Street alley, strings of hundreds of fairy lights lead to the balloon-strewn bohemian bricked courtyard, where a bangin’ DJ set is firing up revellers not adverse to the intermittent showers, while those who are swill killer prohibition-cool cocktails in the pimped-up industrial chic of neighbouring watering hole Strange & Co.We get our own party started with a round of Orleans’ cocktails; the classic Red Snapper ups the ante with a Creole spin on the classic Bloody Mary by adding...

Get ready for some epic birthday antics as Christchurch bastion of cool Stranges Lane notches up its first anniversary on August 8. True to form and celebrating in style across its three killer venues the Stranges Lane crew have organised a near endless night of bangin’ live music, awesome eats and sweet drink specials, including a fundraising cocktail getting behind the Canterbury Earthquake Children’s Trust (respect!). The shenanigans kick off at 6pm in typical Lower 9th Diner style with a five minute burger chow down comp with a year’s worth of free burgers up for grabs for the lucky burger beast (enter via Facebook and Instagram – FYI, you’ll need to get creative go get noticed!). Living up to its name, crankin’ cajun and creole dining/party hot spot Orleans will be rockin’ funky birthday fare (think ‘Old Bay’ Seasoned Blue Swimmer Crab and Dark Chocolate and Cherry Meringue Pie with...

To celebrate the diversity, culture & history of New Orleans and Mardi Gras, Strange’s Lane will be transformed into Christchurch’s very own Bourbon Street this Saturday, with plenty of live jazz, carnival performers, street food and good old fashioned Southern (very southern) hospitality! The city'sown mini-Mardi Gras is set to be bursting with high octane energy (indeed, just as in the original Mardi Gras, things may get a little wild, if the promotional imagery below is anything to go by!)  and will be another welcome injection of good food, culture, music and style back into our rejuvenating CBD; and better yet, it’s all free! Group reservations are available – get in now by calling the venue on 03 365 7312. ...

Still missing the late, lamented Cartel of pre-quake days? Us too. Hope blossoms though, with the creators of the His Lordship's Lane late-night legend nearing the sure-to-be-massive June launch of their new entertainment precinct in the heart of the city. Since Cartel, The Britomart Hospitality Group has established similar iconic venues in Auckland including 1885, The Britomart Country Club, Mexico, and Orleans. Now with their return to Christchurch, the boys from Britomart are set to offer an exciting new Christchurch playground for day or night – Strange's Lane. Situated on the former Strange & Co Department Store site, in the eye-catching new building you've probably noticed on the corner of Lichfield and High Streets, Strange’s Lane bridges the gap between the past and the future. Odes to the original building’s industrial roots are evident in inspired architectural references, which lend a dynamic and convivial atmosphere to the precinct. At the entertainment...
