A night at the movies in Christchurch just got classier with the opening of the new Deluxe Cinemas at The Tannery. State-of-the-art boutique theatres designed with the discerning cinemaphile in mind, the new venue comes to us from the Stewart family, the brains trust behind Alice Cinematheque (nee In Videoland), the film library and Egyptian-themed mini-picture-palace that’s a city institution. These guys know movies, and it shows in their new venture; both the 32 seat and larger 54 seat auditoriums at the new Deluxe have been designed with careful consideration of sightlines, digital projection and a rich Dolby sound experience, and décor, lighting and climate control are all harmonised to create a supremely comfortable, sophisticated and relaxed atmosphere. Rejecting modern multiplex mayhem for a return to the more romantic era of movie-going, Deluxe is ditching popcorn for hand-rolled ice creams, gourmet hot nuts, cheese boards from Canterbury Cheesemongers, fresh coffee, character...

My grip on the steering wheel is whitening my knuckles. I kick off my shoes under the ‘tree of gratitude’ mural. The genius of husband and wife duo Katie and Berin Turner, Grassroots’ crowd-funded beginnings (larger...

Lacking that get-up -and-go, feeling on edge or just wanting to shake a persistent cough? Why not do as they did back in the day with a trip to the delightfully anachronistic herbal pharmacy The Apothecary down at The Tannery, where old school traditional remedies beat down modern day drags. Among their shelves of lotions, potions, teas and brews you’ll also find hot product of the moment: organic cacao powder and cacao butter. Famous for its energising and – look out – aphrodisiac properties – this magic stuff is the purest edible form of the cacao bean, and pops up all the time on healthy-eatin’ guru Dr Libby’s list of favourite ingredients due to its general goodness and powers of revitalisation. While you’re there why not put a spring in your step with their No Rest for the Wicked Adrenal Tonic, take the edge off with Point Break Nerve Tonic or avoid...
